Pressure Relief Device Types | The Types And Functions Of Pressure Relief Devices On Cylinders

A significant portion of AHG’s industrial, medical, and specialty gases are sold in cylinders. The pressurized vessels are available in multiple sizes, materials, and capacities, and can contain gases in gaseous, liquid, or in a dissolved state. At AHG, we follow the Compressed Gas Association’s (CGA) standards and guidelines. It is essential that every user understands how to handle the cylinders as the same properties each gas is valued for can also case hazardous conditions.

Cylinders are designed to be pressurized to a certain service or working pressure, going beyond this pressure can be hazardous. Because of this, each cylinder is fitted with a safety valve that is pressure or temperature activated device that prevents the pressure within the cylinder from rising above a predetermined threshold, thereby preventing rupture of the cylinder.

Types of Pressure relief devices:

There are multiple types of pressure relief devices and the type of safety valve used is determined by the cylinder’s inlet connection.

1- Type CG-1

A rupture disk is used to prevent excessive pressure build-up, this type is non-reclosing.

2- Type CG-2 and CG-3

This type uses a fusible device that prevents excessive pressure build-up in case the cylinder is exposed to excessive heat

3- Type CG-4 and CG-5

These types of valves utilize a combination of rupture disk and a fusible device, and require the pressure and temperature of the cylinder to both exceed the preset values.

4- Type CG-7

A spring loaded pressure relief valve is used to relieve excessive pressures then reclose and reseal to prevent further release.

5- Type CG-8

This type is a combination device  that consists of a rupture disk followed by a series of pressure relief valves.

6- Type CG-9

This is a high pressure fusible device that is used above 500 psi, since this is a thermally activated device it does not protect against excessive pressures.

7- Type CG-10

This type of safety valve is a fusible trigger device that activates within 90 seconds after the cylinder reaches fill pressure, but the pressure should not exceed 13,100 PSI (900 bar) and has a fixed service life of 20 years.

8- Type CG-11

This pressure release valve is capable of reseating and resealing multiple times, and only protects against excess pressures and not excessive temperatures.

9- Type CG-12

This type has a single pressure release device that combines the general characteristics a of fusible and pressure safety devices and can be activated by both.
